Description
This session will focus on two printmaking methods: Relief block printing and screen printing.
Relief block printing
Relief block printing is a method for creating custom images on paper. Carved linoleum blocks can also be used to emboss texture onto wet clay, similar to that of a rubber stamp.
Students will use block printing tools and skills to create a relief image that will be hand-printed on paper and later used to emboss clay. Students will learn how to transfer designs onto 5x5 blocks, explore various carving techniques, and follow the proper steps for printing on paper using the press. They will then learn how to use a tile press to aid in embossing the clay surface with the block, and slow drying techniques for clay tiles. Towards the end of the class session, there will be a glazing demonstration showing how underglaze and translucent glazes can be used to enhance the textured surface of each tile.
Screen Printing
Screen printing is a process in which ink is pushed through a mesh screen to transfer a design onto a surface. This is done by creating a stencil on the screen, blocking ink from passing through certain areas while allowing it to flow through others.
Students will learn to apply light-sensitive emulsion to silkscreens, as well as how to burn, prepare, register, and print with underglaze. They will design screens featuring their hand-drawn illustrations or digital graphics and will print their underglaze transfers on newsprint. Various transfer techniques will be demonstrated and explored. Students will transfer their designs onto the blank forms they create. Basic wheel-throwing and hand-building processes will be shown to help students create blank forms that will then be decorated. Students are welcome to create pieces using any construction method they choose.
On the last day of class, students will have the opportunity to look at everyone’s work, ask questions, and discuss the results as a group. Students can expect to leave with a variety of paper prints, four glazed ceramic tiles, and newsprint underglaze transfers, along with the skills to continue exploring these processes with their carved blocks and newsprint transfers at home.

Buying Clay
Registration does not include clay. Students must purchase clay from Chases Garage during class time. Clay cost: 25lbs $35.00 + ME state sales tax

Glazing + Firing
Registration includes $25 worth of firing fees (1,000 cubic inches). Students may produce work totaling more than 1,000 cubic inches; additional work will be subject to our $0.025 per cubic inch firing fee.
Chases Garage is a ^10 Reduction Firing Studio
To ensure correct glazing and firing, all students must use ^10 clay and glaze from Chase's Garage. We stock: Laguna BMix 10, Laguna #900, Sheffield T3, and Sheffield #42.
Access
Access to open studio time outside of class is restricted to "student members" only. Registered students will receive an email with additional details about student membership before the session begins.
Logistics
Registered students will receive a “welcome” email one week prior to the start date.

Ned Roche is Co-Owner of Chases Garage Artist Studios & Gallery. He sometimes folds Things out of clay.

Erica Hood
Erica earned a BFA in ceramics from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2014. As a ceramicist with 15 years of experience, she specializes in functional and sculptural pieces that often incorporate mixed media and printmaking techniques. She has been teaching ceramics in New England for the past ten years. Previously, she has taught at MassArt, Haystack Open Door, Umbrella Arts Center, and The Clay School. She is currently the studio and office manager at Chases Garage Artist Studios in York, Maine, where she also teaches ceramics. Erica lives in Attleboro, Massachusetts, with her husband, Owen Roberts, a fellow MassArt alum.
TERMS + CONDITIONS
Adults (18 or older) may register for classes & workshops at Chases Garage. Chases reserves the right to cancel courses, substitute instructors, change course times, and limit enrollment. The student agrees to abide by any and all rules and policies of the studios. Chases will assume no responsibility for any loss, personal or physical. With enrollment, a student consents to being photographed in classes (unless we informed in writing). These photographs may be used by Chases in future promotional efforts without specific written permission from the student.
CLASS WITHDRAWAL & REFUND POLICY
100% Refund (minus processing fee): Student must withdraw at least 6 business days prior to the start of the class.
50% Refund (minus processing fee): Issued when a student withdraws 5 business days or less from the start of the class.
NO REFUNDS ARE GIVEN ONCE A CLASS BEGINS.
If Chases cancels a course, registered students will be notified and all fees will be refunded in full. Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment requirements will be canceled, typically two to four business days before the class begins.
