Cone 10 Reduction
Chases Garage is a ^10 reduction ceramic studio
We fire ^10 reduction in our downdraft Bailey gas kilns.
Reduction firing is an atmospheric firing technique that reduces the amount of oxygen in the kiln during glaze firing. This occurs by limiting the amount of oxygen and restricting airflow in the kiln during different parts of the firing process. The oxygen-deprived environment creates free-flowing carbon and causes chemical changes that affect the color and texture of glazes.
Preparing, loading, firing, and unloading are time-consuming processes that can take several days. For this reason, our studio experiences a slower turnaround time for glaze kilns; we often fire only one or two glaze kilns each month.
Chases Garage takes pride in the time, dedication, and attention to detail required to operate a ^10 reduction facility. Our staff has extensive knowledge and experience in ceramic chemistry, making glazes and slips from scratch, operating 10-reduction glaze kilns, and managing all aspects of such a facility.
