Description
This 6-week course focuses on designing and creating decorative, three-dimensional clay relief tiles.
Students will begin by brainstorming imagery and sketching designs that include foreground, middle ground, and background elements. They can draw inspiration from nature, animals, patterns, or anything that sparks their creativity. Next, students will learn to prepare tiles by pounding, rolling, and cutting thick clay slabs with tools such as rolling pins, a slab roller, and a tile press. Designs will then be transferred to the wet clay tiles. Through demonstrations and hands-on exercises, students will experiment with additive and subtractive techniques, including sculpting, carving, and stamping, to bring their designs to life. We will discuss various methods for securely hanging ceramic tiles, including keyholes, wire loops, and notches. Techniques for underglazing and glazing to highlight textured surfaces will also be demonstrated.
