Description
David Ernster, a lifelong artist and craftsman, will lead a demonstration-based workshop focused on thrown and altered forms. Throughout the day, his demonstrations will showcase construction techniques and practices for creating various altered forms, both on and off the potter's wheel.
“Throwing pots for more than thirty years, I've had a lot of time to really examine the process. I think it’s important to not only understand the nature of the material but also to have at least some basic ideas about the physics of throwing on the wheel. I love talking with people who are genuinely interested in clay; I think this will be a lot of fun!”
What to Bring
-Notebook + something to write with
Skill Level
This is a demo-only workshop. No experience is required to attend, but those who have some wheel-throwing experience will benefit the most.
Logistics
Registered students will receive a “welcome” email one week prior to the start date.
David Ernster
I have spent my life working with my hands. There is something spiritual and precious about handmade objects. They connect us to the past, tradition, and passion of the maker, a passion I think we all feel and crave to be part of. I became interested in both clay and metal in part because of the archival qualities of the materials. As a child I was fascinated by the fossils I would fin along the riverbank and later by metal artifacts and coins. In school I became interested in wood and salt firing for its rich interactive surfaces and the connections the process offers to our history. My present work is not what most would call traditional. It explores the interface of past and present through surface, color, and design layered with historical and traditional processes.
