Description
Cyanotype Printing is a photographic printing process that produces unique cyan-blue prints. The simplest kind of cyanotype print is a photogram, made by arranging objects on sensitized paper that is then exposed to UV light and washed in water. The uncovered areas of the paper turn a deep blue while blocked areas remain white.
In this four hour workshop, students will use pressed plants to create one of a kind botanical cyanotype prints. Students will learn the entire cyanotype process start to finish including: coating paper, composing imagery with provided flora, exposure, and development through both demonstration and hands-on experience. There will also be time for students to forage flora from the surrounding property. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with printing on various surfaces, including wood, postcards, book pages, and more. At the end of the workshop, students will leave with a variety of prints and skills to continue to print with this process at home.

Laura Ritch
Laura graduated from The Art Institute of Boston in 2008 with a BFA in photography before becoming a nurse in 2014. While caring for hospitalized patients in 2020 and simultaneously being pregnant with her daughter, she returned to art as a way to make sense of the world. She inspired by the parallel journeys of both her artistic practice and that of the intimate human experience to which nurses attend. Laura’s Cyanotypes are a result of flora that she has grown in her garden or locally collected on the coast of Maine.
“Each bit of botany has been grown, pressed and composed before I immortalize it in blue.”
